People ask me this all the time. They have heard the phrase "sequential discovery puzzle" thrown around in the puzzle world, and they nod along, but they are not quite sure what it actually means. So let me explain it the way I would to a friend, with no jargon.
🧩 What Sequential Discovery Actually Means
A sequential discovery puzzle unfolds in stages. You solve one small step, and that step reveals the next. Then you solve that one, and it opens up another. The puzzle gives up its secrets a little at a time, in order, like a story that only makes sense one page after the next.
Often, one stage will hand you something you need for a later stage. A part comes loose, a tool appears, a piece that seemed decorative turns out to have a job. You do not see the whole path at the start. You discover it as you go, which is exactly where the name comes from.
🔍 How It Differs From a Trick Lock
This is the part that trips people up, so here is the simple version.
A trick lock has one hidden idea. There is a single clever secret to figure out, and once you find it, the lock opens. The challenge is spotting the one thing you were not expecting. Our FunLock, LoopHole, and B-Lock are trick locks, and they are wonderful. When that single idea clicks, it is a great feeling.
A sequential discovery puzzle is a different animal. Instead of one secret, it has several stages that must be solved in the right order. Opening it is not a single aha moment, it is a series of them. You cannot skip ahead, and you cannot stumble through by luck. Each stage has to be earned before the next one appears.

Here is why I love designing these.
With a single solution, the puzzle is over the moment you find it. It is a great moment, but it is one moment. With a sequential discovery puzzle, you get that feeling again and again. Every stage you clear gives you a small victory and a fresh question. Just when you think you have it, the puzzle shows you there is another layer.
That rhythm of progress, wall, breakthrough, progress again, is what keeps people up until 2am saying "just one more step". The journey lasts longer, and the satisfaction stacks up the whole way through.

💰 Why Sequential Discovery Puzzles Take Longer and Cost More
A few honest reasons.
They take longer to solve because there is simply more puzzle in there. More stages, more to discover, more steps to work through in order. An 18-hour puzzle is not padded out with busywork, it is genuinely deeper than a 3-hour one.
They cost more because they take much longer to design and to build. Fitting several stages inside a single brass lock, and making every stage flow logically into the next, is a far bigger engineering job than hiding one clever idea. More internal parts, tighter tolerances, and a lot more testing before I am happy to release it.
🧠 Who They Are Best Suited For
Sequential discovery puzzles are for patient solvers who enjoy a challenge that lasts. If someone likes to sit with a problem over several sessions, put it down, come back, and chip away at it, these are for them.
They are a natural fit for engineers, makers, and anyone with a mechanical mind who wants to understand how something works, not just get it open. If you know a person who reads the manual for fun and enjoys a project rather than a quick win, a sequential discovery puzzle is a gift they will remember.
If it is someone's first puzzle lock, a trick lock is often the friendlier starting point. Solve one of those, catch the bug, and a sequential discovery puzzle is a brilliant next step.
